Turku

60 27.1' N, 22 16.2' E

Turku is the oldest city in Finland. The first written mention of the City of Turku is in a Papal decree dated on the 23rd of January 1229. The City houses over 172 000 people and the greater regional area about 300 000. Turku is one of the most significant regional areas in the country. The town has three universities, superb location with modern harbour and international airport

The regional area is well known especially for its archipelago spreading from Turku to Stockholm. Over 20 000 islands rise out of the sea. The archipelago is an internationally unique environment. It is a multiform swath, a hundred kilometres wide spreading out to sea south?west of Turku.

Known as the cradle of Finnish civilisation, Turku is only 160 km by road from the capital Helsinki and 320 km by sea from Stockholm. The city is conveniently located on the Stockholm-Turku-Helsinki-St. Petersburg axis along the E 18 highway.

To the tourist the archipelago offers unique experiences in nature, interesting histories, indigenous culture, peace, smooth rock, green glades, idyllic marinas, islands villages, a variety of program, churches, the atmosphere of the Rosala Viking settlement, traditional handicrafts and tasty foods. All this is within easy access.
